How to use a Brush cutter

2-4-2018

Anyone who has lived in an area with high, thick grass or who is responsible for clearing paths and trails knows the importance of having a dependable brush cutter. These helpful tools make short work of long, thick grasses and even small saplings with a brush blade attached, that would prove to be too much for most lawnmowers. Adding a brush cutter to your arsenal of lawn care equipment will simply make the majority of those duties much easier. Here are some easy to follow steps for using ONE.

Always read the owner’s manual and safety manual prior to use to help you fully understand the operation of the equipment. This will save you both time and help provide a safer, more positive experience.

• As with any outdoor equipment, be sure to wear the proper safety equipment including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. Also be sure to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes at all times while operating your brush cutter.

• Prior to starting, be sure your brush cutter is fully fuelled with the correct mixture of gas and 2-stroke oil.

• When using a blade, it is important to use the harness provided that attaches to the brush cutter and fits around your back/shoulders for added safety. Because brush cutter use is often for longer periods of time, this harness also will help you handle the brush cutter with ease.

Once you have all safety equipment in place, you are ready to start using your brush cutter. Simply hold the trimmer head at an angle close to the ground and move the trimmer in a side-to side motion, being sure to not get too close to the ground itself. When you notice the trimmer line getting too short, simply bump the centre of the head on the ground while running at full throttle and more line will be distributed from the head itself. The safety shield includes a cut-off knife that will keep the line from getting too long.

For longer, thicker grass and brush, a brush cutter grass blade is available and replaces the Speed-Feed trimmer head (be sure that your equipment is completely shut off and parts have stopped rotating prior to attempting any equipment modifications).

Once the grass blade is installed, you are ready to tackle thicker grass and brush. One effective tip is to swing your brush cutter in a side to side motion from right to left, cutting only on the right to left swing. This will push all of the cut grass to one side of your path which will help with clean-up of the grass and debris once the job is complete.
